In UN Comtrade, tariff line data refers to the original harmonized data submitted by countries. The harmonization process applies to all data dimensions except for the commodity. As a result, tariff line data includes codes used at the national level and may contain product codes that exceed the standard 6-digit HS classification if reported to us by the data provider. Additionally, values are converted to USD.
It is important to note that tariff line data does not include aggregated high-level information, such as total commodities or overall world trade partners. There is also no outlier detection or quantity estimations, and the data is not converted to other classifications like BEC or SITC.
Moreover, tariff line data may contain duplicate records because it can originate from a more granular level, such as monthly data. However, these are not true duplicates. This granular data can be valuable for calculating specific indicators, such as the distribution of unit values. The final trade data will aggregate any duplicate records.
In summary, tariff line data is closely aligned with the original data submitted by countries.
